How to Choose a Home Safe
Fire vs. burglary protection, the ratings that actually mean something, what size to buy, and where to put it.
Read the GuideA safe can weigh anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand pounds. Getting it from the truck to the right spot in the right room — without damaging the house, the safe, or anyone’s back — is its own trade.
Most moving companies either won’t take a safe or will charge you for the privilege and hope for the best. The weight is concentrated in a small, top-heavy box, which makes stairs, thresholds, and soft ground the dangerous parts of the trip. Done wrong, a safe move can crack a floor, gouge a staircase, damage the safe’s door or lock — or hurt someone.
We sell, deliver, and service safes, so moving them is everyday work for us: we deliver, position, anchor, and install safes, and relocate safes people already own.
Two safes of the same weight can cost very different amounts to move. What matters is the route from the truck to the room:
If we’re moving a safe you already own, the same questions apply at the pickup end too.
Because the path is most of the price, we need to see it before we quote. A short walkthrough video does it:
Text it to (703) 684-6161, then fill out our safe delivery questionnaire so the installer has the details in one place. We send the quote once we’ve watched the video.
Many managed buildings require a Certificate of Insurance before any heavy delivery, and some restrict elevator use to set times. Check with building management early — and tell us what they require when you ask for a quote, since specialized insurance requirements can add a fee.
A safe that isn’t bolted down can be tipped over or carried off, so moving it is also the moment to anchor it properly. Let us know what the floor is — concrete slab, wood subfloor, or something else — and whether the safe is going into cabinetry, so we bring the right hardware.
It depends almost entirely on the path — parking, steps, staircase shape, and the narrowest opening matter more than the weight alone. That’s why we ask for a short walkthrough video before we quote.
Yes. We relocate existing safes — moving house, renovating, or an inherited safe that’s in the wrong room. The same path questions apply at the pickup end.
Yes — we deliver and place safes on stairs, through doorways, and into position. Tell us how many steps there are, how wide they are, and the shape of the staircase, and send the video.
Yes. Anchoring is part of a proper installation. Let us know the floor type so we bring the right hardware.
